So I am very aware some of you are not venturous, so you get an amazing Beef tongue recipe with a mild insight into my life in case you don’t want to make this. But I challenge each and everyone of you to try. I have shared this recipe with two different people who both made it and loved it, and they rarely eat beef, never mind tongue.
So get on and make the recipe and read my post :)

Hi. Can I use a frozen tongue?
Andrea
Would this work for Beef Tripe(stomach)? Do you have any crock pot recipes for Beef Tripe? Thank you for your time :)
George Bryant
Beef tripe would not be a good substitute for this recipe. They just aren’t similar enough. This would be closer to a chuck roast. At this time I don’t have any recipes for tripe.
laura
Have you tried crisping the cooked tongue? I’m curious because I heard on Food Network that it tastes like bacon, but I couldn’t find a recipe. Thanks for your recipe; I have a tongue on the stove now.
George Bryant
Oh I have not
Linda
Well….you got me thinking about beef tongue at all, which is a baby step to actually eating it!
George Bryant
Haha I know how that feels

I’ve had a beef tongue in my freezer for the last couple months. I finally got up the courage to cook it. I tried your recipe. It was very tasty. Although in the end, I had so much trouble with the look of a whole tongue in my crock pot and then peeling off the outer layer of skin felt icky. I also don’t like picking meat off pig’s heads. Give me some chicken feet or liver any day over tongue! Or I’ll eat it as long as someone else cooks it!
George Bryant
I have the same problems haha, glad you liked it.
Kristina
So this is the second time I’ve tried tongue this way and mine won’t shred. Does that mean it hasn’t cooked long enough?
Jim
Don’t buy from MM Livestock Co. Many bad reviews.

I love your message and your recipe! It was my first time making tongue and it turned out great.
George Bryant
Thanks!!!! :)

I was searching the web for a new tongue recipe and was thrilled to find this one in your blog ( I have been a tongue fan forever) Of course I ended up continuing to read your blog. Your a great inspiration. My nephew has a CrossFit gym in Denver and has told me how wonderful PaleOMG is. Your references check out! I am looking forward to receiving your recipes and inspiration. Thanks… keep up the good work! Perhaps I’ll even try sleeping a bit longer tonight.
The crock pot is ready for tomorrow’s new recipe
George Bryant
Hi! I’m glad you are excited for upcoming recipes. PaleOMG is a wonderful website. We are currently writing a cookbook together. Good luck with your new sleeping patterns :)
Genevieve
George, thanks for this great post on caring for ourselves with sleep, real food, etc.. I also loved the parts about friendship :) (btw…I like the way you write, it’s real and happy)
I have a great farmer to get some beef tongue from, but I am scared to try it :/ I am going to try and get over my fear because every recipe of yours I’ve tried has been delish!!! Thanks again for the website, recipes and encouragement.

I made this but didnt have the heart to shred it. I cut it about a 1/4″ thick against the grain and poured thesauce over it. Amazing
George Bryant
Well that works too :)

I bought a lengua today. I’ve had barbarcoa many times but never have I tried lengua. While at the meat market, my mom convinced me to buy one. I went straight to this site for a recipe. It is delicious!!!! My family will love it for Sunday breakfast :)
George Bryant
Woohoo that makes me so happy ;)

Wow! After reading these finger licking good recipes I used this recipe to ‘devirginize’ my crockpot. When I threw in the tongue, and peeked after a couple of hours I really wondered what the result would be. But…. after the 8 hours the tongue came out perfect. The texture is so soft, tender and it tastes great!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!!
George Bryant
You are so welcome Marleen, I am so glad you enjoyed it

I am making this tonight and just for fun decided to Google ‘crock pot beef tongue’ to see if I would be the first to put it on my blog, hehe. well of course not! I don’t think I can ever be possibly the first for anything :) Whatever it is, the internet has it and there is nothing new under the sun. Can’t wait to devour it tomorrow!
George Bryant
Hope you love it
Shelly
Yet again another great recipe!!! Thanks George!! Made the Beef Tongue last night. Like many others I was hesitate about the whole thing. But I overcame my fear and dug in. I’m glad I did. It was delicious!! I followed the direction to a T with the ingredients. Cooking time I had to change up though, only because I was afraid that it wasn’t going to be fully cooked after the 4th hour. I put it on high for the remaining time. Very tender and not a piece of it was dry. The meat tasted almost like the neck bone you use for soup. The sauce was delicious as well. The two put together almost tastes like spaghetti. Since we have leftovers I am going to heat it up tonight for dinner and serve it with spaghetti squash. Thanks again!!!
George Bryant
So awesome you loved it and braved making it :) I was surprised when I made it too :)
Lauren
Hi George,
I made this for the first time last night and I think I screwed something up. I let my tongue go a little longer than you recommended (a little over 9 hours because it was over 4 lbs) and then I pulled the tongue out of the broth and put it in the fridge to cool. I just started to shred it for dinner tonight but the texture is really weird. It’s like a thin layer of shredded beef under the skin and mush on the inside. The flavor is nice, but honestly the texture is like grainy mush or something. Is this normal?? What should I do differently?
Thanks!
Lauren
CivilizedCaveman
Lauren,
That has never happened to me. All I know is once mine was done I shredded it immediately and then served it. Mine had the consistency of a slow cooked beef roast
Kate
What do you do with all the juices from the crock pot with the onions and garlic. It seems like such a waste to just throw away?
Civilized Caveman
Sometimes I will save it and use it as a stock for a soup
Kate
Great stuff, thank you! Very excited about tucking into this one! It. Smells. GREAT.

I just submitted my co-op order today and placed tongue on it because of you! I heard you talking about it in the podcast with Abel James, and I just happen to be the adventurous type, especially when it comes to food. I JUST got my very first crock pot yesterday, and intend to devirginize it with your pulled pork recipe, while waiting to pick up my co-op order next week. Love your writing style, seems you write like you think, which is what I do, too. And don’t worry about being single and 27 sitting at home and cooking and taking pictures of your food. I’m pretty much in the same boat, but I don’t have a blog that I’m doing it for! I just do it because it makes me happy. :)
I’ll let you know how the tongue comes out!
Civilized Caveman
Oh awesome Beth. Can’t wait to hear how you like everything. Enjoy and thanks for all the awesome words of encouragement. I will continue to post my brain dumps.
BethM
Making the tongue this weekend and am wondering what 20 oz. of sliced tomatoes looks like.. ?
Civilized Caveman
Ummm I used a can of them Beth so it looked like a 20 ounce can
BethM
Ha! When I think “sliced tomatoes”, well, I’m thinking of tomatoes that I’ve sliced. Yay for canned tomatoes taking the guesswork out of things. ;)
Well, that was good for a laugh!
Civilized Caveman
Haha good times
Ted
I love trying things that I haven’t had before, so this was a natural choice. Great recipe! I increased the garlic a little bit and added several whole okra to the crock pot.
Due to a lack of variety of peppers locally I simply used a small can of tomato paste, 3/4 of a red bell pepper, Mexican chili powder, and a dash of curry powder. This was all thrown in a pan and slowly boiled down with some water, then blended until smooth.
I’ve got a bowl of the veggies, meat, and sauce sitting in front of me as we speak. It’s delicious! Thanks for the great recipe.
Civilized Caveman
You are most welcome, so glad you enjoyed :)
George
Goatsandgreens, I can't wait to hear how you like it. On a side note, my shredded tongue was extremely tender though so maybe I got lucky.
goatsandgreens
Ah. I am going to adapt this, but I love the concept. I do think food at the shreddy-stage is less tender than just before it gets there (excepting a few things like lamb), so I'm not going to crock pot it quite as long. But I'm pretty much otherwise going to follow this. Thanks. Tongue is one of my favorite bits on an animal.
George
Thank you Tara
Tara
I want to NOT be freaked out by the beef tongue since I can eat something encased in an intestine and really…which one of THOSE is more disgusting!?! But I can barely tolerate handling pork tenderloin because of its beef tongue appearance. LOL
I have totally been in your position…exhausted, overwhelmed, eating crap that my body is obviously hating me for eating, …. It's a great reminder for why this lifestyle works for me.
And can I say that I am confused as to why you are single??? Way too many single primal hotties!

I think this is what happened to me yesterday – thank you for sharing your experience – seriously not feeling like such a freak for once…
And I'm not afraid of trying beef tongue – looks like a great recipe!
George
Kat Please do, you will love it, I was weirded out at first too
Kat
Great post. Sleep is so important yet seems to be something everyone tries to push off. I notice a big difference when I don't get enough…actually I'm pretty sure everyone else notices too LOL.
I don't know if I'll ever get up the nerve to try tongue, it just freaks me out looking at it uncooked. The after photo looks amazing though :)
George
Thank you Sarah, I am sleeping more now, bedtime at 830pm for the 430am alarm clock. Shanezgirl you need to try it, once you get over preparing it, its amazing
shanezgirl
Thanks so much for sharing. It's a great reminder for me because I stay up till 1am nearly everyday.
I'm not at that hardcore stage of doing this recipe YET but I will keep it in mind since everyone says it's so good.

Right on. I am a midwife and it is the same story with new mamas. Not enough sleep. I explain that anyone who is sleep deprived can break down. It is something that is done to POWs as well. Sleep deprive them and you can break them down! Glad you got your wake up call (so to say). Your picture though…. wowsa~!~

Mmmm, I made tongue tacos for the first time a couple weeks ago with the tongue from the grassfed beef we bought a few months back – and WOW, I've been missing so much! It was the most tender, amazing tasting cut of meat I've ever had. I told DH I wish there were 5 more tongues in the freezer…
And keep up on that good sleep…adrenal fatigue is nothing to fool with :-(
George
Thanks Patty, and thank you even more for reading my rant
Patty
Excellent lesson George, and I think it's awesome that you shared your experience. So many people are sleep deprived these days, and it's a major contributing factor to car accidents, violence, and lots of other bad decisions. You are so right, everything else can wait! :-) Oh, and I love the tongue recipe!
