Smokey Burgers with Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce - Practical Paleo Review
Ingredients
BURGERS:
- 2 pounds grassfed ground beef
- 1 tablespoon chipotle powder
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon sea salt
- 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
FOR SAUCE:
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup chopped pineapple
- 1 tablespoon coconut aminos
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds to garnish
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
BURGERS
- Let your meat come to room temperature and then mix your ground beef with all of the above smoky spice blend
- Go preheat your grill to medium heat
- Form your meat into 8 equal size patties and set on a plate while your grill comes to temperature
- Once warm, place your burgers on the grill and cook ~6 minutes per side or until you reach the level of doneness you desire. 6 minutes at 400 Degrees got me medium rare
- Once done let them rest for at least 10 minutes before serving and garnish with the sauce below
SAUCE
- In a small sauce pan, combine all of your ingredients except the sesame oil and simmer over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes or until most of the water has cooked off
- Place the cooked pineapple in a blender and blend until smooth
- Add your sesame oil and blend until well incorporated and then use as a sauce for your burgers
Notes
You can cut this recipe in half by using 1 pound ground beef and cutting all the spices in half

Very tasty! Great blend of flavors. Thanks!

Oh my goodness!! This recipe was AMAZING!! We had the burgers with grilled asparagus. My husband gets a little skeptical about the paleo sauces I make and claimed he wasn’t too thrilled with this one. But when he put it on the burgers, he LOVED it! This sauce compliments the burgers perfectly. We made it with 1 lb bison, 1 lb grass fed beef. The only change I’d make is to cut the salt down a little. Thank you!

You are so welcome

Wasn’t sure I’d like this with the sesame & pineapple….BUT wow played off the chipotle perfectly.
Thanks for sharing!

I’m just starting on this paleo journey, experimenting with recipes, and just got Practical Paleo from Amazon. I love the book! Not only is it “sexy,” it is also so well organized. I love that Diane Sanfilippo is a nutrition expert and talks about specific health issues. I didn’t know that cabbage was bad for me with my thyroid issues but that carrots and beets are very good for me. The two recipes I’ve tried, the bacon-wrapped chicken and the salmon cakes, were really easy to make and tasted really good.
I look forward to making these sliders. They look delicious! I just need to get my hands on some coconut aminos for the sauce. I will, of course, rate the recipe when I get the chance to make it.

Just finished making this and devouring 2 patties while the others were cooking (never go food shopping or start your weekly cooking fiasco starving) and I love them. Just slightly too salty for me, but I should have listened to my gut when I saw the 1Tbs of salt. Will pair it with some avocado for the remainder of the patties though and that should do the trick to tame the salt. Time to go buy Practical Paleo :)

Hope you enjoy them more next time Jenn

My pregnant roommate was hit with a massive craving for fast food earlier today, and I landed on your recipe for these while searching Google for paleo-friendly burger recipes. She conquered the urge to drive off to Arby’s, and waited patiently for an hour and a half while I thawed the meat (I used grass-fed ground bison), prepped the kitchen, cooked the burgers and sauce, and whipped up some oven-baked sweet potato fries. Thanks for helping me make her day! That pineapple teriyaki sauce is outta this world! I’ll definitely let her know about the book.
George Bryant
Thanks man, so glad it kicked her craving :)

This was wonderful! Thank you for sharing.

ok… I have to admit, ever since seeing the “Poop Pageant” page… I’ve become a turd analytical professor. Embarrassing to admit that part, but this book is so awesome!

Hi George, thanks for the preview recipe! We tried this last night with a pound of ground bison…perhaps it’s because the meat is so lean but the 2 tbsp of the spice mix was way too strong and salty — and I really like savory, smokey food! I made a large batch of the smokey blend, which is fantastic, so I’ll try it out again with some fattier ground beef. For bison, it’s probably better to go with 1 or 1.5 tbsp of the mix. But the pineapple teriyaki sauce was perfect!! I have your honey baked ham recipe in the oven now, going to pair with Bill and Haley’s Cinnamon Parsnips! Love you guys!! Hope you’re enjoying the East Coast!
Civilized Caveman
Oh I am sorry it didn’t work, I think the bison may have been a problem but I will note to take it back with the spices in the bison. It is really humid here, I am dying lol
Nicole Weiss Franklin
Ugh, I know it. We’re sick of it, even at the beach! The ham turned out great though!
Civilized Caveman
So glad you enjoyed the ham and once again sorry about the bison.

I agree with Allison, though I am not at all sqyeemish. I thought it rather funny! Gotta love potty humor.
Civilized Caveman
Haha potty humor is great and it’s staying there lol

Great recipe! I was confused by the layout, though. I didn’t realize that I should make the spice mix separately and then add 2 Tbsp of it to the meat, I thought I was supposed to add all the listed ingredients together. Whoops! I used 2 pounds of meat and didn’t double the spices, so the burgers were still good, but if you could clarify a bit it might help others with limited reading comprehension like me. Thanks so much!
Civilized Caveman
Oh awesome. Glad you doubled the meat that works out perfectly. I will try and get to a computer to fix it
Jos
Your hard working recipe blog surely paid off :) You definitely part of the big Paleo food bloggers “inner circle” now. I tried to do some paleo recipe blog but I guess I wasn’t dedicated enough that I couldn’t really keep coming out with interesting recipes to attract more people to my blog :)
Civilized Caveman
Thank you Jos. You should never give up, just post what you really make and eat, thats what I do :)
Zia
Looking good! I’ll have to get it! Thank you

They look yummy! The burgers that is, not the poop.
Just to clarify.
Civilized Caveman
Haha awesome, thank you

Could you please post the Smoky Spice Blend (Page 232)? These burgers look so good I want to make them for a party this weekend.

I already pre-ordered it online! Thanks for the awesome review though. I was wondering what I was actually going to be getting and it sounds amazing!
Civilized Caveman
So glad it helped Amanda. You will be happy
Allison
Could’ve used some text in between the pics of poop and burgers…eugh. ;P
Civilized Caveman
Haha I could have but that wouldn’t have been as much fun
Jenn
Thanks for the preview, but seriously…I pre-ordered this book about 2 months ago and your post feels like a big tease!!

Hi, George
Wow, this sounds so interesting. It seems that this book has absolutely everything we could possible ask from a cookbook. And these burgers are so yummy. Thanks for sharing!

I’m so glad you love it. I can’t wait for people to continue to uncover nuggets of wisdom as they read different parts of it as time goes on! Take it to the bathroom next time, too and refer to page 75 ;)
