The hardest thing one can ever discover is that there is a debilitating disease that we must live with for the rest of our lives. When you learn that your body’s immune system is attacking its own tissues, it can result in terrible pain that can disrupt the way we once lived. I’m Anne and I would like to share my experience of getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and how the AIP diet helped alleviated symptoms of my Rheumatoid Arthritis.
I had very bad joint pain in my hands, wrists, elbows, hips, and feet after the delivery of my first child in 2006. I had experienced comparable sensations before being pregnant, but they would disappear after a day or two, so I attempted to bear the suffering as best as I could. I didn’t seek expert care until I awoke in the middle of the night, unable to sleep due to acute foot agony.
My primary care physician suggested an x-ray because he suspected a break. But my foot was not broken so the doctor recommended blood tests. I was informed I might have Rheumatoid Arthritis after seeing the lab results and was directed to a Rheumatologist, where the diagnosis was confirmed. More tests and an MRI were scheduled for me.
I was doubtful about the diagnosis. I was in my twenties and very active. To the best of my ability, I attempted to consume a nutritious diet. From my perspective, it felt like it was a hasty diagnosis. My husband and I decided to wait a little longer. I wanted to make sure my body was attacking itself in the first place. I underwent another MRI on my hands and wrists a year following the diagnosis, which revealed it was worsening.
Because of pregnancy, I was on and off numerous drugs over the following five years. Because of the continuous agony, I was only able to nurse my babies for about four months after the second and third pregnancies. At first, the meds seemed to work perfectly, or so I believed.
How I Discovered the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP)
Even though I was taking prescription meds, the pain reappeared as time went on. The Rheumatologist intended to administer biological drugs at the beginning of 2013. Throughout that year, several people tried to persuade me that there was another method to treat my arthritis. For me, each of these instances was necessary to push me to the final result. I began seeing a chiropractor in March of 2014. He assisted me in determining what I needed to do to heal. He told me the first time we met that I didn’t need to be on the drugs I was on. After all, those pills had provided me with some relief, so I thought he was acting a little irrationally. Regardless, I began his treatment plan. I also started following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP).
This isn’t a single-pill miracle. I had to drastically alter my dietary habits, get more sleep, and keep a low-stress level (not easy to do raising a small family). It was difficult. It’s still difficult at times, but through time I was able my doctor took me off the prescription meds.
I went to a family reunion after I had stopped using my prescription drugs (July 2015). I knew my brother worked in the health food industry and created protein powders there. This discovery piqued my interest and I suggested that he might be able to create a protein powder that I could consume.
He would contact me about new ingredients and send me samples over the next two months. Each sample improved until we discovered the perfect formula and name, Autoimmune Health & Nutrition.
I’m still daily work to manage my disease and am grateful to have a product like Paleo Perfection Protein to help me along the way.
