Caveman Casserole (Shepherds Pie)

Yep we can thank my Irish roots for this one.  I have to be honest I had no idea how this was going to turn out and it is a mixture of about a gazzillion different recipes but I am happy with the results.  Hope you enjoy.

Caveman Casserole (Shepherds Pie)

Ingredients
  

  • 2 pounds ground turkey 93/7
  • 2 1/2 pounds of sweet potatoes peeled, and cubed
  • 1 medium white onion diced into 1 inch pieces
  • 2 carrots peeled and grated
  • 10 oz frozen peas
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
  • 4 tablespoons ghee
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 very ripe banana
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • coconut oil

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400 Degrees F
  • In a deep skillet or dutch oven heat 2 tbsp of coconut oil over high heat
  • Add your ground turkey and break up with a wooden spoon and season with salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning
  • Put your sweet potatoes in a pot, cover with water, cover pot, bring to a boil and cook until done, depending on the size of your cubes but should be about 12 minutes
  • You should still be stirring your ground turkey, now add in the onions and carrots and cook for another 5 minutes
  • In a small saucepan on another burner over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp of your ghee and once melted whisk in your arrowroot powder. Whisk for about a minute and then add your chicken stock. Season with salt and pepper and let thicken for a few minutes
  • Take your turkey off of the heat and drain all the excess oil out.
  • Put your skillet or dutch oven back on the heat and stir in the gravy
  • Next stir in your frozen peas and turn the heat off, let sit in pan for a couple minutes while you prepare the potatoes
  • Drain the potatoes into a colander and leave them there while you return the pan to the heat and melt your remaining 2 tbsp of ghee
  • Peel and slice your banana and throw it in the melted butter, now add your sweet potatoes on top and using a masher, mash them to the consistency of your liking
  • Put your turkey mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish if you didn't use a dutch oven
  • Now spread your mashed sweet potatoes evenly over the top of turkey mixture
  • Set it in the oven and let it bake for 10 minutes
  • Remove, serve, and enjoy as much as I did

    I tried this tonight and it turned out great to me except for the banana flavor. It was overpowering and my husband said he couldn’t enjoy the rest of it much because of the banana taste. I will definitely make this again as I loved how much it made (since most of my paleo recipes only make a little)but I will omit the banana next time. Thanks for sharing this.

    This is DELICIOUS! My husband and I threw an egg on top for breakfast and that was even better! Nice job here George. Next time I’m going to omit the banana, it was a bit sweet for me.

    I make mine with ground lamb and garlic mashed cauliflower instead of sweet potatoes. The kind I make is a lot more flavorful than what my mother made. Being the daughter of two English immigrants, she followed the English tradition of making relentlessly bland food. The only “seasoning” in her shepherd’s pie was some sautéed onion. I like lots of garlic, rosemary and thyme in mine.

      Great idea using ground lamb! This recipe looks wonderful but I don’t have access to ground turkey unless I order it online and that isn’t always convenient (I live in Holland). I’m going to make it this week.

    I tried this tonight with 93/7 ground beef I needed to cook, and sweet potatoes left over from last nights dinner. I didn’t have poultry seasoning pre-made.. but I had most of the individual spices in the cabinet. It came out awesome. Thanks for this recipe! Now you got me thinking.. maybe I should have put this on the broil setting to brown the potatoes.. and maybe if I wanted to get really crazy.. experiment with some sort of almond meal crust to make it into a pot pie?

      Peas are one of those gray areas and I was cooking for others so I left them in there. My opinion is if they don’t cause any ill effects then go for it.

    We had this for dinner tonight. it was a bnit labor intensive and timing intensive. The meat mixture smelled like a pot pie, it was heavenly. I think next time I will leave the banana out, the flavor was a bit overpowering and we could not taste much else. but in all, it was very good and I will be making it again for sure, even my 6 and 11 year olds loved it!
