How To Set Up Your Bedroom For Better Mental Health

When you want to lighten your mood and improve your outlook on things, changing up your bedroom can make a big difference.

This is the space where you spend your nights (and maybe parts of your days?), so it makes sense to make it your own, with renovations and makeovers that speak to your unique personality and help you feel better in your private sanctuary.

Here are some tips for setting up a bedroom in a way that helps you to feel better each day – contributing to your holistic wellness.

Use The Right Colors

Most people respond well to bright, warm colors like subtle yellows and oranges. Bright red may not be the best choice, except for some small accent areas.

Some people, though, prefer earth tones like different tones of beige, tan and gray. Or they may like cool colors like cornflower blue or lavender.

Choose your particular tones from all the paint colors available at today’s modern hardware stores, and get cheerful colors on your walls. You’ll feel the calming and relaxing impact of having your own chosen hues to look at. 

Choose Furniture Deliberately

It might be easy to just truck in a huge dresser and enormous antique bed frame from the local thrift store, but the furniture you use will affect how you feel in your bedroom.

Think about minimal furniture like smaller IKEA models or dressers to save space in your bedroom design.

You’ll also want the right-sized mattress. A good mattress gives you a good night’s sleep, and the right size fits your floor plan. Think about firmness, too; do you need a medium-firm mattress or another type? 

Maintain Clear Aisles

Going along with the last tip, you want clear aisles to move around the bedroom.

Too many of us don’t plan for this kind of free space. As a result, bedrooms seem cramped, which can be a nuisance, to put it mildly. 

You want enough room to move around while selecting clothes, talking to people on the phone,  dancing, or whatever else you like to do. You can’t do that if there’s no space to step from one end of the room to the other. 

Use Your Own Style

Here’s where you make your own bedroom your own space, with a creative approach that sets your mood and shows off your preferences to visitors. 

Think about the kinds of posters and wall hangings that inspire you to be your best self daily. Do you have favorite celebrities, athletes, or musicians that you want to adorn your walls?

Your decor says a lot about you and speaks to you, so make deliberate choices to get the right setup in your bedroom!

If you do have a window, though, or more than one, you want to be able to dress it up properly to usher in natural light while also serving as a barrier for light when it has to – like when you need your sleep, and it’s not dark out yet. That versatility is key for getting the right atmosphere in your bedroom. 

The right kinds of window-dressing help out a lot, too, in a bedroom style. Think about the colors you’ve chosen for the walls, accents, and appliances to match. Be sure to sketch out the layout to know more about what the finished result will look like – because you’re probably investing significant money in this home makeover. 

Include Stuff To Do

Another great tip is to have amenities in your bedroom so you have something to do while relaxing, getting ready for sleep, or otherwise spending time in this personal space.

For some people, that’s a laptop and a desk. For others, it’s an arts and crafts booth or a reading chair. Whatever it is, take time to add that to your bedroom design so you can enjoy it for months and years to come.

Banish the Clutter

Clutter makes a bedroom feel uncomfortable and unusable. At least it’s that way for most people. Another good tip is to clear away the clutter and have designated areas to keep items out of your way as you spend time in a relaxing home space.

All of these tips can have a very positive effect on your mentality and outlook on life. You might not think about it at first, but after you finish your bedroom setup, you’ll see how enjoyable and relaxing this can be. In fact, you might even want to tell your friends so they can do this sort of “life hack,” too. Think about the power of switching up the visuals and floor plan in one of the most important places in your home.
