Dealing with your mental health is challenging at the best of times, but if you have a demanding job, then it can be even more difficult. You feel like you’re running on two tracks all the time.
The key to managing work while you have a mental health issue is to make small and sustainable adjustments. Ideally, you should also recognize you need help early and get the assistance you need.
So what do we recommend doing in this situation?
Acknowledge what’s going on and be kind to yourself
The first step is to acknowledge what’s going on and to be kind to yourself. Wildlife might feel challenging. Ideally, you want to go through it without self-judgment. Denial can sometimes make things worse for you.
For example, instead of saying that you have a character flaw, just tell yourself that you have a health issue. The latter is easier to deal with than the former when you’re going through a challenging time.
Protect your basics
The next thing you want to do is protect your basics. These are non-negotiable things that you absolutely need in your life if you’re going to be healthy. For example, make sure you’re prioritizing your sleep. Getting a shut eye at night is critical for feeling good the next day. You also want to make sure you’re eating regularly and moving around when you can. Doing the basics right can make a big difference.
Take a break from work
Sometimes taking an extended break from work and going to rehab is essential. Getting professional support, especially if there’s substance abuse involved, is essential.
When you take a break from work, you give your whole body and mind a chance to reset. Your nervous system can recover and repair, and you have the best chance of getting better. If you don’t take a break, you feel like you are constantly on the treadmill and always falling further behind.
Communicate strategically at work
Another thing that’s worth doing is communicating about what’s happening strategically at work. For example, instead of saying outright that you have depression or anxiety, tell people that you’re managing a health issue or you’re taking some time off to improve your focus and energy.
You can also try requesting reasonable adjustments, something that employers need to provide under the law in many countries. For instance, you might be given extra time for tasks or be given reduced hours. You could also be offered flexible start and end times.
Leverage professional support
You may also want to look into leveraging professional support. Employee assistance programs are usually free and can help you access professionals or chaplains who can assist with mental health issues. You may be able to get therapy like ACT or CBT to use as coping tools. These can be game changers if you’ve been experiencing problems for a while.
Build small wins
Finally, it’s a good idea to build small wins. If you can say that you’ve accomplished something, then it can be easier to get through challenging mental health episodes.
